Field manager vs payroll manager — what's the difference?

Two operational roles inside the Manager role.

Purpose

Some customers split manager work between two operational roles: field managers and payroll managers. Both are the same Manager role in Protiv, just different responsibilities.

When To Use This

Use this when:

  • You're structuring your team
  • Someone asks "do we need both?"
  • You're training new managers

Field Manager Responsibilities

A field manager focuses on operational quality:

  • Reviews ProPays before approval
  • Resolves disqualifiers (safety, customer signoff)
  • Applies penalties (quality, damage)
  • Manages crew assignments
  • Spots underperformance
  • Owns the day-to-day work output

Most active in: ProPays, Pro-Goals, People, Dashboard alerts.

Payroll Manager Responsibilities

A payroll manager focuses on the money:

  • Reviews bonus statements before payout
  • Manages held line items
  • Adds manual bonuses or deductions
  • Adjusts overtime
  • Processes pay-day exports
  • Owns the payroll handoff

Most active in: Bonuses → Statements, Bonuses → Line Items, Reports.

Same Technical Role

In Protiv, both are Manager-role users. There's no separate "Field Manager" vs "Payroll Manager" in the system.

The split is operational. Some customers have one person doing both. Some split it across two people. Larger orgs split it across teams.

When to Split the Roles

  • Single-person: Small org, one operator wears both hats
  • Split between two managers: Mid-size org, dedicate one to field and one to payroll
  • Split across teams: Large org, multiple field managers (one per branch) + a payroll team

Common Mistakes & How To Fix Them

  • "Our field manager is also doing payroll and it's eating their time" Split the role. Have someone else own statement reviews and pay-day exports.

  • "Payroll manager is approving ProPays but doesn't know the work" Don't let payroll managers approve without field input. They should focus on statements, not ProPays.

  • Permission matrix: what can each role see and do?
  • How do I invite a manager or admin?
  • How do I limit access to pay and budget data in Protiv?
