How Do I Add an Additional Bonus to a Worker’s Bonus Statement?

Learn how to add an additional bonus to a worker’s bonus statement, choose the correct overtime classification, and fix mistakes if needed.

What is an “Additional Bonus” in Protiv?

An additional bonus is extra money you choose to add at your discretion, after work has already been reviewed and approved.

This is not the same as job-earned bonuses.

  • Job-earned bonuses are handled automatically through ProPays

  • Additional bonuses are added manually by you on a bonus statement

Examples of additional bonuses might include:

  • A customer compliment or review

  • Extra effort during a tough week

  • Recognition for going above and beyond

These bonuses are added after approval, not during job execution.

Important: Overtime & Compliance
(Read This First)

Before adding an additional bonus, there’s one key thing to understand:

Some bonuses affect overtime.
Some don’t.

Here’s a simple example:

  • A worker normally earns $30/hour

  • An additional bonus effectively raises their rate to $34/hour

  • Overtime must be calculated using the higher rate

Because of overtime laws, Protiv needs to know how this specific additional bonus should be treated.

That’s why you’re asked to choose between:

  • Discretionary

  • Non-discretionary

What’s the difference?

A bonus is generally considered non-discretionary if:

  • The worker knew about it ahead of time, or

  • The worker expected it based on prior communication or program rules

Because bonus programs are usually communicated in advance, many additional bonuses added on statements are treated as non-discretionary for overtime purposes.

A bonus may be considered discretionary only if it was:

  • Not promised

  • Not expected

  • Decided after the fact

A simple way to think about it:
If the worker knew about the bonus ahead of time, it usually affects overtime.

If you’re unsure which option to choose, that’s normal.
Select the option that best reflects whether the worker expected the bonus ahead of time.

You don’t need to be a lawyer.
Protiv automatically handles the overtime calculation based on your selection and helps keep you compliant.
