How to Connect QuickBooks Time to Protiv 2.0
Step-by-step instructions for connecting your QuickBooks Time account to Protiv.

This setup only needs to be done once.
Before You Start
Make sure you have:

Admin access in Protiv

Admin access in QuickBooks Time

Two browser tabs open
-
one for QuickBooks Time
-
one for Protiv
-
Using Google Chrome works best for this setup.
Step 1: Enable the API in QuickBooks Time

Log in to QuickBooks Time.

In the left menu, find Feature Add-ons.
-
Click Manage Add-ons.
-
In the add-ons window, search for API.
-
Click Install.
If the API is already installed, you can move to the next step.
Step 2: Create a New Application in QuickBooks Time

Open the API section in QuickBooks Time.
-
Click Add a New Application.
Fill out the fields:
NameProtiv
DescriptionProtiv Software
Technical Contact
Select your name or another user in your company.
Step 3: Copy the Callback URL from Protiv
Now switch to your Protiv tab.

Locate the Callback URL.
-
Click Copy.
This URL allows Protiv to securely receive time data from QuickBooks Time.
Step 4: Paste the Redirect URL in QuickBooks Time
Switch back to QuickBooks Time.

Paste the copied link into the OAuth Redirect URL field.

Click Save.
After saving, QuickBooks Time will generate two credentials:

Client ID
-
Secret Key
Step 5: Add the Credentials to Protiv
You will now move these credentials into Protiv.

Copy the Client ID from QuickBooks Time.

Go to Protiv.

Paste it into the Client ID field.
Next:

Copy the Secret Key from QuickBooks Time.
-
Return to Protiv.
-
Paste it into the Secret Key field.
Caution
Make sure there are no extra spaces before or after the values when pasting. Extra spaces can prevent the connection from working.
Step 6: Connect the Integration
In Protiv:

Click Connect. You will be redirected back to QuickBooks Time.

Click Allow to approve access.
Once approved, the connection is complete.
Protiv can now import time data from QuickBooks Time.
Troubleshooting
If the QuickBooks Time connection fails, check these common issues.
API Option Not Visible in QuickBooks Time

If you cannot find API under Feature Add-ons, it may not appear on the main add-ons screen.

Click Manage Add-ons, then search for API and install it from there.

Once installed, you can continue with the integration setup.
Redirect URL Mismatch or Authorization Fails

If the authorization step fails, verify the OAuth Redirect URL inside QuickBooks Time.

It must exactly match the Callback URL shown in Protiv.
-
Even a small difference will cause the connection to fail.

You should have:

Caution
Do not type the URL manually. Always copy the Callback URL directly from Protiv and paste it into QuickBooks Time.
Invalid Client ID or Secret Key
If Protiv shows an error when connecting:

Confirm you copied the Client ID and Secret Key from the same QuickBooks Time application you created.

Check that there are no extra spaces before or after the values when pasting them into Protiv.
Extra spaces are a common cause of connection errors.
Authorization Window Does Not Open

After clicking Connect, QuickBooks Time should open a screen asking you to approve the connection.

If nothing happens, a browser pop-up blocker may be preventing the approval window from opening.
Caution
If the approval screen does not appear, check your browser for a blocked pop-up and allow it. Then try connecting again.
