Overtime adjustments vs overtime rules — what's the difference?
Two different overtime concepts in Protiv. Use them for different things.
Purpose
Protiv has two separate overtime concepts. They're easy to confuse but they do different things.
The Difference
Overtime Rules
Rules define when overtime kicks in for the customer's organization. They follow state and local labor laws.
Examples:
- "Overtime starts after 40 hours per week"
- "Daily overtime after 8 hours" (California-style)
- "Double time after 12 hours per day"
You configure these once in Settings → Payroll and they apply to all calculations going forward.
Overtime Adjustments
Adjustments are one-off corrections on a specific bonus statement.
Use cases:
- A worker's OT was miscalculated and you need to fix one statement
- A retroactive OT bump wasn't picked up by the rule
- A union contract requires a specific OT bump for a project
How to Add an Overtime Adjustment
- Open the bonus statement
- Click into the worker's line items
- Find the OT adjustment toggle
- Enter the amount
- Save
The adjustment appears as a line item with an OT category.
What's in an Adjustment
Each adjustment records:
- Amount
- Bonus rate (the rate that should have been used)
- OT adjust rate (the difference)
- Overtime seconds for the period
- Status (active, excluded, deleted)
Most managers just need to enter the amount. The other fields auto-calculate.
Common Mistakes & How To Fix Them
"My OT rule isn't applying to a worker" Verify the worker is on the right branch. Rules can be branch-specific.
"I added an adjustment but it's not on the statement" The adjustment may be in
excludedstatus. Check the toggle."I need to retroactively change OT on closed statements" Closed statements can't be modified. Add adjustments to the next open statement, or contact support for closed-statement fixes.
